Orale in the Press

  • Oracle – Food &Drinks

Orale Mexican Kitchen is Coming to Morristown

Morristown is getting ready to add another exciting restaurant to its vibrant food scene. Orale Mexican Kitchen is expanding to Morristown, replacing J&K Steakhouse at 56 South Street. This isn’t your average Mexican restaurant: Orale infuses creativity into traditional Mexican foods and heightens the experience by offering craft cocktails, happy hour brunches and featuring local street artists on the walls of the restaurant.

“We don’t consider ourselves as traditional in any concept. We definitely break the rules when it comes to Mexican,” co-owner Alex Mendelsohn said. “We do have some traditional areas though, like every winter, we always put on a very traditional móle.” The restaurant’s name is unique as well. “Orale is a slang Mexican term, not even necessarily Spanish, but predominantly Mexican. And it has a ton of different meanings… It means awesome, exciting, great, let’s go. If you look it up in Urban Dictionary, you’ll probably find it, but you won’t find it in the normal dictionary.”

Orale’s other locations include Hoboken and their original home in Jersey City, which also encompasses their cocktail bar Dullboy.

Orale Mexican Kitchen Opening Second Location in Uptown Hoboken

Update: Hoboken Location Closed (July 2025).

A large restaurant space at the very northern end of the Mile Square City is getting filled after going dark for almost a year, as a Mexican eatery from Jersey City is expanding to what many dub Hoboken’s “final frontier.”

Orale Mexican Kitchen has officially announced their imminent arrival at 1426 Willow Avenue. The sprawling space clocks in at over 3,000 square feet and was formerly home to Anthony Pino’s Porter Collins venture, which shockingly closed last September after just six months of business.

Some had questioned if the former restaurant’s location played a role in its fate, but Orale co-owners Louis Alvarez and Alex Mendelsohn don’t seem fazed by Hoboken’s outer limits. The pair, who cut their teeth at Rosa Mexicano for many years before opening Orale on Grove Street in 2013, is pumped about their latest project.

    Get Ready, Hoboken!

    [ PRESS RELEASE ]

Update: Hoboken Closed (July 2025). Orale’s second location will feature a large private dining space and specialty dishes

Orale, one of Jersey City’s most popular restaurants, will open an outpost in the Mile Square City in late fall/early winter of 2018. Margaritas, guacamole, and tacos for all, all the time. To borrow the restaurant’s translation: C’mon in!

The restaurant will take over the former space of Porter Collins, located at 1426 Willow Avenue. Plans for the space include a main dining room area with loud, pumping music and graffiti-laden walls, and a cocktail centric bar program which will be more low-key with late hours. In another exciting departure from the Jersey City location, there will also be a larger private dining space, accommodating up to 100 guests.

As one of Jersey City’s most beloved mainstays, Orale has become known for a menu that’s distinctive and craveable, an atmosphere that’s dynamic and vibrant, and a frozen margarita that’s strong and delicious. It’s where a carefully-curated tequila list meets a Happy Hour Corona. It’s where a quick drink after work can turn into a elegant date night.

Guests can expect carry-over of the same regionally-inspired Mexican cuisine at the new location, as well as much of what we all look forward to on those week days. There will also be specialty dishes exclusive to the Hoboken outpost, dreamed up by a team that’s always focused on creating new flavors that respect tradition. As with all things Orale, expect a fresh and original food and beverage menu.

“We’re excited to bring our signature food, drinks and vibe to Hoboken,” said Alex Mendelsohn, Orale’s co-owner. “We’ve worked hard to make Orale the most consistently delicious and fun place to be in Jersey City, and we’re looking forward to achieving the same thing on an even bigger scale in Hoboken.”

Orale Mexican Kitchen Opening Second Location in Hoboken

Update: Hoboken Location Closed (July 2025)

There have been rumors for weeks {possibly months?}, but it’s happening — Orale Mexican Kitchen is opening a second location in Hoboken! The popular Mexican restaurant {that serves delish margs + yummy eats} will be taking over the former Porter Collins space in the Mile Square at 1426 Willow Avenue. Their OG location, 341 Grove Street in Jersey City, proved to be super successful, drawing crowds for their brunches, drinks, and unique decor {and space, might we add}. Orale’s second location in Hoboken will have a similar vibe but a more off-the-beaten spot in Hoboken. Here’s a bit more about Orale and its Hoboken plans:

Orale’s menu and cocktails have been a draw since inception. A few of the go-to picks include the Pollo Tacos {flour tortillas FTW}, and if you’re looking for an extra greasy caloric splurge, the Buttermilk Biscuits with Gravy are a necessity — as are the Breakfast Nachos for the table {with crisp duck confit, salsa, cheddar, black beans, raddish, crema and pico de gallo, + two fried eggs}.

Where to Eat and Drink in Downtown Jersey City

Don’t count out this underrated dining destination

    Stefanie Tuder
    NY Eater

In the last five years, downtown Jersey City has exploded with diverse restaurants, helped along by lower costs and the rezoning of main drag Newark Avenue into a partially pedestrian-only street lined with restaurants and bars.

    Orale Mexican Kitchen

Street food gets an ultra-hip setting — graffiti-ed walls, neon lights, and bright colors — at Orale, where locals go for Mexican food and a raucous scene. There are plenty of easygoing tacos and guacamole to pair with a myriad of margaritas, and a very lively bar scene. It all adds up to make this an especially great place for groups.

  • Cocktail Margaritas

Margaritas now come in an array of flavors

    By T.J. Foderaro
    For Inside Jersey

The craft cocktail movement has elevated our appreciation of the bartender’s art and spawned a generation of celebrity mixologists. It’s also stretched the definition of many classic cocktails almost beyond recognition.

To wit: Martinis made with sake, rather than vermouth, and garnished with cucumber, rather than olives. Manhattans flavored with apple cider and cinnamon. Bloody Marys that incorporate practically anything and everything in the refrigerator.

But no drink has undergone as radical a transformation as the margarita, the staple of the summer bar circuit.

Party time: Jersey City’s Orale Mexican Kitchen toasting Cinco de Mayo

JERSEY CITY | Where’s the party? The question tends to be very popular this time of year, especially on May 5 — better known as Cinco de Mayo. This celebration of Mexican pride dates back to May 5, 1862 when the Mexicans scored an unexpected victory over the French army in the Battle of Puebla. New Jersey may not hold the parades like our neighbors south of the border, but restaurants maka pretty big deal about it.
